Karlene S. Stevens Joins GCEO

Stevens, J.D. to the agency's leadership team. Stevens has joined the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity-Office of the Governor as the Equal Employment Division Director. She will enforce the Georgia Fair Employment Practices Act and manage the Equal Employment Division.

GCEO Kicks Off Fair Housing Month with 2021 Virtual Conference & Fair Housing Initiatives

April is National Fair Housing Month! The Federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) was enacted as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act on April 11, 1968. When the Fair Housing Act was passed 53 years ago, it sought to promote diverse and inclusive communities in which everyone could thrive, and have access to equitable resources and opportunities. In 1988, Georgia passed the Georgia Fair Housing Law (GFHL), which is substantially equivalent to the FHA. The GFHL was enacted to safeguard individuals from housing discrimination in the sale, financing, and rental of a dwelling. The GFHL continues to preserve and further the interests, rights, and privileges of individuals by advancing fair housing priorities to ensure that all Georgians can achieve housing equity.

Governor Kemp Appoints New GCEO Board Members

Governor Brian P. Kemp announced six new appointees to serve on the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity's (GCEO) Advisory Board. In addition, Governor Kemp reappointed three current GCEO Board members.

Equal Employment

The Equal Employment Division of the Commission enforces the Georgia Fair Employment Practices Act of 1978, as amended, which makes it unlawful for a state agency to discriminate against any individual on the basis of race,sex, age, disability, national origin, color or relation. 

Fair Housing

The Fair Housing Division of the Commission enforces the Georgia Fair Housing Law, which prohibits various forms of discrimination in residential real estate transactions on the basis of race, sex, religion, disability, national origin, familial status or color.
